Major Arcana cards
By Nova · Published October 15, 2026 · Updated October 15, 2026 · One Card Tarot
The Major Arcana are the 22 named cards in a Rider–Waite-style deck—from The Fool (0) to The World (21). They carry the big themes of a reading. On One Card Tarot, the free one-card shuffle draws only from these 22 (~50% reversed when reversals are on); each card below opens a full upright and reversed meaning page.

What are the Major Arcana?
In a 78-card deck, the Major Arcana are the 22 trump-style cards with names and numbers. The other 56 are the Minor Arcana—four suits for everyday feelings, thoughts, work, and drive. When a Major appears, treat it as climate: a pattern that wants a clear next step, not a trivia answer.
The free online shuffle does not deal a full 78-card random draw—it stays on the Major Arcana. Start a free pull on the home one-card tool, or read the method on how to do a one card tarot reading.
According to A.E. Waite in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910), tarot speaks through symbolism rather than a private language of secrets—so each Major here is read as image and category, then one practical next step.
Fool’s Journey in three beats
You do not need the whole story each time. Knowing the beat helps you place one card without overreading it.
Beginnings and structure
Fool through The Chariot: starting, will, care, rules, choice, and forward drive.
Tests and turning points
Strength through Temperance: endurance, solitude, change, fairness, pause, endings, and balance.
Shadow, light, completion
Devil through The World: attachment, rupture, hope, uncertainty, clarity, reckoning, and wholeness.

When a Major Arcana card shows up in one-card tarot
- Skim the 22 Major Arcana in order so you know where your card sits in the Fool’s Journey.
- Open the meaning page for the card you drew (or the card you are studying).
- Read upright or reversed against one real question—not every possible life area at once.
- Take one grounded next step before you redraw the same question.
Reversals are on by default (~50% chance). If you want every card upright, switch to Upright only on the draw tool. House rules live on tarot methodology. If you already disliked today’s answer, wait at least 7 days before repeating the same question.
What Rider–Waite still teaches for Major Arcana
Major Arcana pages on One Card Tarot stay close to Rider–Waite symbolism: read the image in front of you, then take one next step—not a prophecy you must force to fit.
“The true Tarot is symbolism; it speaks no other language and offers no other signs.”

Major Arcana FAQ
What are the 22 Major Arcana cards?
The Major Arcana are the 22 named cards in a standard Rider–Waite-style tarot deck, numbered 0 (The Fool) through 21 (The World). They mark larger life themes—beginnings, choice, rupture, hope, completion—rather than day-to-day suit details.
What are Major Arcana cards used for?
In a reading, a Major usually signals a bigger pattern or turning point. On One Card Tarot, the free one-card shuffle draws only from these 22 cards, so your free pull is always a Major Arcana card with upright or reversed meaning and one next step.
What is the order of the Major Arcana?
From The Fool (0) to The World (21). Readers often call that sequence the Fool’s Journey: a story arc from open beginning through challenge and renewal to completion. Use the list below to open any card’s full meaning page.
How do Major Arcana differ from Minor Arcana?
Majors are the 22 named archetypes. Minors are the 56 suit cards (Cups, Swords, Pentacles, Wands). Majors tend to read as climate; Minors as weather. Browse the Minor Arcana hub for suits—our free shuffle still uses Majors only.
Can I draw a Major Arcana card online for free?
Yes. On One Card Tarot you can draw one card free with no signup. The shuffle uses the 22 Major Arcana, with roughly half the draws reversed when reversals are on. Then open that card’s meaning page if you want more depth.
